Outstanding e-learning Team

This award recognises the e-learning team or initiative that had the greatest impact in the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe the team and/or the initiative and explain how it has successfully improved e-learning. Be sure to outline the wider innovations and technologies you may have exploited
  • Quantify the impact on your institution and, if appropriate, further afield
  • Judges will look for ideas that could have wider benefits if adopted throughout the sector
  • Explain how your team's work improves on standard practice in the sector


Outstanding Finance Team

This award recognises outstanding work within finance departments. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe your institution's financial strategy and demonstrate how your team contributed to its development and implementation
  • Judges will look for evidence of effective cost control, budgeting and improvements in auditing processes
  • Demonstrate how your team is successfully communicating financial initiatives and working with others within your institution
  • If you are basing your entry on a particular initiative or initiatives, explain how your team contributed to the outcomes
  • Explain how your team’s work improves on standard practice in the sector


Outstanding Marketing/Communications Team

This award recognises outstanding work within marketing and communications departments. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Explain how your communications strategy and initiatives have delivered quantifiable changes in the public perception of your institution
  • Outline your objectives for the past year, and explain how your team met or exceeded them
  • If you are basing your entry on a particular initiative or initiatives, explain how your team contributed to the outcomes
  • Judges will welcome evidence including testimonials, press cuttings, sample advertisements and web grabs as part of the entry
  • Explain how your team's work improves on standard practice in the sector


Outstanding Human Resources Team

This award recognises outstanding work within human resources departments. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Judges will look for good all-round strategic performance, including but not limited to: organisational development tools; effective communication between HR and the wider academic community; internal evaluation of the effectiveness of your department; initiatives to support your institution's strategic plan; succession planning and talent management; plus HR's contribution to improving institutional performance
  • If you have been involved in any restructuring/downsizing or other initiatives linked to funding cuts, outline how these have been achieved
  • If you are basing your entry on a particular initiative or initiatives, explain how your team contributed to the outcomes
  • Explain how your team's work improves on standard practice in the sector


Outstanding Estates Team

This award recognises outstanding work within estates departments. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Outline your team's major achievements in property and facilities management over the past three academic years. Examples could include redevelopments, innovative new buildings or the successful adoption of a new estates strategy
  • How are you developing and encouraging sustainable solutions on and around your campus buildings?
  • How have you worked to reduce estates costs, and what savings have you delivered? For example, have you looked at sharing the management of your facilities with other educational establishments or outsourcing more work?
  • If you are basing your entry on a particular initiative or initiatives, explain how your team contributed to the outcomes
  • Explain how your team's work improves on standard practice in the sector


IfL

Outstanding Innovation in Teaching, Training or Learning Provision

This award recognises providers that have launched innovative ideas to improve the quality of teaching or learning. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe what you have done, and how it has had a major impact on learning and teaching
  • Why is it novel and innovative?
  • Explain the nature of your initiative and the challenges involved.
  • What were the results? Provide evidence of demonstrable progress or success
  • What could be the impact if your initiative were adopted more widely?


Outstanding Practice in Sustainability

This award recognises and rewards those providers that can demonstrate the most imaginative and joined-up approach to the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe the background to your approach to sustainability issues.
  • Detail the nature of your sustainability work. If it relates to buildings, explain what you have done and the targets you have set or achieved; if it relates to how you manage or operate your facilities, spell out your objectives and achievements to date. Provide as much evidence as possible of the progress you have made on issues such as recycling, water/energy reduction, sustainable transport initiatives, ethical suppliers, biodiversity and work with staff and local communities
  • How does your contribution differ from standard practice in the sector?
  • How does this work fit within your institution’s overall CSR strategy?


Outstanding Employer Engagement

This award recognises strategic and innovative approaches to delivering employers' workforce development needs. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe any new ways you have developed of working with employers
  • Provide evidence of your high-quality, flexible provision, and show how it is responsive to employer and employee needs
  • Explain the positive impacts on the businesses you work with.


Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community

This award recognises the individual, team or FE provider that has made the most imaginative attempt to aid the wider community socially, culturally or economically. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe the background to and context of your initiative.
  • Explain the nature of the work, and the challenges involved.
  • Provide evidence of demonstrable progress or success. Show how the project has made a difference to the target community.
  • Outline how staff and students contributed to the success of the project.


Outstanding Entrepreneurship in Learning and Skills

This award is an opportunity to recognise providers that have embedded entrepreneurial activities into the fabric of their institution. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Describe how you have instilled enterprise and entrepreneurship throughout your organisation.
  • Have you involved your students and staff, and how have they become more entrepreneurial? Are your staff rewarded and incentivised for developing new innovations and attracting new sources of finance?
  • How successful have your commercial operations been? Be sure to include details of any external training work you have secured for local businesses.
  • By how much have you grown your income from sources other than public funds?
  • If you have managed to secure philanthropic donations or contributions from others sources please provide details


Outstanding Leadership in Learning and Skills

This award will go to the provider that demonstrates the greatest breadth and depth of leadership and management skills across a wide range of functions, including most of the areas recognised by other award categories. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Underline all the areas where you believe you have excelled. Our judges will look for benchmark data that proves your institution has delivered best-practice management across the board
  • Describe the impact of your work. Provide evidence of demonstrable progress or success
  • If you are basing your entry on a particular initiative or initiatives, explain how your team contributed to the outcomes
  • Explain how your work improves on standard practice in the sector


LSIS

Outstanding Provider of the Year

This will be awarded to the provider that has demonstrated exceptional performance in the past academic year. It covers the year 2011-12 and is open to all further education providers in the UK. In your entry:

  • Although, teaching, student achievement and business performance will be taken into account, the main criterion will be evidence of particular bold, imaginative and innovative initiatives that have advanced your reputation over the last year

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award will be given to the individual who, in the opinion of TES’s editorial board, deserves to be honoured for his or her contribution to further education above and beyond their own academic interests. Institutions and individuals are welcome to submit nominations for consideration.
